Radiation Doors for hospitals and x-ray clinics

Radiation doors are lead-lined doors used to shield operators from potentially harmful stray x-rays in hospitals, clinics and dental offices.

Radiation doors are essential for the safety of both medial staff and patients to prevent unwanted exposure to stray radiation coming from x-ray sources and nuclear medicine.

A radiation door can be a single or double depending on the configuration required.  Double doors feature a lead-lined insert in the meeting style to block stray radiation from passing between the door leafs.  The radiation doors have a solid wood core with bonded hardwood edge strips.  Lead sheeting is bonded to both sides of the timber core followed by a paint grade skin.

Lead sheeting is typically 10kg on each side of the core of the radiation door, but thicker lead can be added to increase performance up to as much as 40kg.

Lead is used as a radiation shield because of its high density and high atomic number.  Because of these properties, lead sheeting is effective at stopping or scattering both x-rays and gamma rays.  In the absence of effective lead shielding, the electrons within the human body could be adversely affected, resulting in DNA damage and potentially cancer.

Viewing panels can be added to these specialised doors without reducing performance. They feature radiation glass with an appropriate lead-lined mounting frame.  These special radiation glass panels can provide the equivalent protection of between 1.6mm and 2.2mm of lead shielding, depending on specification.

To Specify Radiation Doors

Because the options vary considerably and radiation containment requirements can vary so widely depending on the situation, please contact us for assistance in developing a specification.

X-Ray Doors

We manufacture radiation-proof doorsets that can be custom-made to match your existing interior decoration and other non rated doors, offering maximum protection while retaining a pleasing appearance.

Thicknesses of lead can vary from 1mm to 3.5mm and the thickness you will require to meet the stringent radiation protection standards (BS EN 12588, 1999), depends on the radiation source output, proximity and patient through-put. In order to achieve a greater radiation protection, multiple layers of lead may be used.

In Ireland, lead codes typically range from code 3 (1mm lead) which would be suitable for use in dental and veterinary buildings, to code 8 (3.55mm lead) which is the highest level of protection, and most commonly used in emergency medical centres and hospitals.

The majority of X-Ray doors utilise code 5 or 6 (2mm/2.65mm lead) which would be the appropriate level of protection for applications such as CT Scanner rooms. Additionally, the lead in our X-Ray doors is pressure laminated within the construction of the product making it completely inaccessible.

X-ray room doors

The Kavidoors X-ray door is fully leaded for protection against radiation leaks in X-ray rooms. This creates an insurmountable barrier to such rays. This door model is applied in X-ray rooms of hospitals, clinics or laboratories.

Made with anodized aluminum frames with rear fixing system and telescopic adjustment. The frame is also leaded inside, to give continuity to the radiation protection barrier.

The sash has a lead foil that creates an insurmountable barrier against the action of X-rays. Optional sash in stainless steel finish, phenolic, Estetic Clean PET and adjustable stainless steel hinges.

The Kavidoors X-ray window is designed to be implanted in different areas: monitoring windows for X-ray, Angiography and Tacs rooms; protective windows for laboratories; lenses for safety glasses; X-ray or medical diagnostic screens for airport security.
